RIESGO Annual Meeting 2018

Improved risk management of natural disasters in Chile, Ecuador and Peru

The first annual meeting of the RIESGOS project took place from October 16 to 17, 2018. For almost a year, the RIESGOS team has been working on the research and development of scientific methods to better understand complex interactions in multi-risk analysis and prevent future natural disasters.

In addition to the presentation and discussion of the work results of all project partners, the so-called showcases were the focus of the two-day meeting.

The research project is pursuing an iterative development approach to develop components for a multi-risk information demonstrator and to incorporate the actual needs of each end user.

In a first step, showcases will be developed that show the components of a complex risk situation based on a fictitious event. Individual components and functions of the planned demonstrator will be described by posing the question: "What would happen if ...?" an earthquake triggers a tsunami, which in turn damages critical infrastructure. Exposure and vulnerability are dynamic quantities that need to be mapped accordingly.

In addition to an interactive presentation of the desired functionalities, a "proof of concept" will be carried out for a part of the process chain in order to demonstrate the functionality of interfaces and to test the technical feasibility.

This year's annual meeting marks an important milestone in the RIESGOS project, as the work will then be presented in user workshops on-site in Chile, Ecuador and Peru, and the next development steps will be coordinated with the South American research partners.
