Sites for installation of PV solar panels and measuring instruments determined

The EnerSHelF project plans to install measuring devices related to the use of solar PV energy in health facilities in three locations throughout the country. At this stage of the project, the locations of the three health facilities were set. The three health facilities differ in the number of beds for patients and the health service offered.

The locations were chosen primarily because of their different climatic zones. St. Michael's Hospital and St. Dominic Hospital are located in the "deciduous forest" climate zone, which is warm and humid. The Kologo Health Centre is located in the climate zone "Guinea Savannah", which is hot and dry. This geographical distribution in different climate zones will allow the collection of different data during the field experiments. Technical field measurements will be carried out to collect real measurement profiles of the electrical load and supply of the facilities as well as weather data.

In order to better understand the demand of Ghana's healthcare institutions for PV energy solutions and their challenges in obtaining and maintaining reliable access to energy, these site-specific activities will be complemented by a comprehensive survey of Ghanaian healthcare institutions in a later phase of the project.

Saint Dominic Hospital

The St. Dominic Hospital - founded in July 1960 - is a facility with a capacity of 357 beds in the urban area of Akwatia. Akwatia is located in the district of Denkyembour in the Eastern Region in southern Ghana and has a population of about 25,000 people. The existing PV system is supplemented by a load measuring system, an automatic weather station, a dust sensor, a radiation sensor with module temperature recording and a cloud camera.

Kologo Health Centre

The Kologo Health Centre is a public health centre in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It offers general health services. The facility has about 11 beds, a maternity ward, an OPD, detention rooms, a pharmacy, a delivery room, a vaccine store etc. Kologo is a small rural village 20 km south of Navrongo, near the northern border of Ghana. A PV system is being set up, supplemented by an automatic weather station, a dust sensor, a radiation sensor with module temperature recording and a cloud camera on the PV system. There will also be measuring devices for load profiles.

St. Michael's Hospital

St. Michael's Hospital - founded in 1958 - is located in the small town of Pramso, about 20 km southeast of Kumasi, the regional capital of the Ashanti region. The hospital has 99 beds, including medical, surgical, pediatric, maternity and eye departments. Approximately 60,000 outpatients are treated annually. In addition to the hospital's services, there are mobile clinics operated by the hospital that visit five remote villages each month to bring maternal health and general medical consultations close to the communities the hospital serves. St. Michael's Hospital will be equipped with an automatic weather station and a load measurement device. A PV system is already installed.
