OrganoRice: Vietnamese students use app to record land and pesticide use in the Mekong Delta

As part of the OrganoRice project, Vietnamese students from Can Tho University are using an app developed by the project to record land and pesticide use. After a short training, the app allows for quick recording of land use, including information on irrigation and crop rotation obtained from interviews with farmers. They can also upload photos onto the app, to show the current situation.

Moreover, farmers are asked to upload information on pesticide use. The app also allows the upload of photos of the pesticide packaging. The data obtained in this way, combined with remote sensing data, enables the generation of a high-resolution map of land use in the Mekong Delta. Furthermore, information about pesticide use and its spatial distribution can be extracted. With the help of this information, hot spots of pesticide contamination will be derived, which can be taken into account when planning future conversions to organic production.

All recorded data is stored in a database. The recording points will be made available online on the OrganoRice homepage.
