Contributions to the global sustainability agenda

Presentation of CLIENT II project contributions to the SDGs. Note: The points represent the number of projects contributing to the respective SDG.

»In our project, we are working on a solution to make wastewater treatment more energy efficient and to recover valuable resources from wastewater. In doing so, we are contributing to the achievement of several SDGs at once.«

Prof. Dr. Heidrun Steinmetz, Project Coordinator PIRAT-Systems

Contributions to the global sustainability agenda

With the 2030 Agenda adopted in 2015, the world community has committed itself to 17 global goals for a better future. The goal is to enable people worldwide to lead dignified lives and to preserve the natural foundations of life; this includes economic, ecological and social aspects. To achieve the sustainability goals, actors from politics, business, science and civil society must pull together.

CLIENT II helps manage global challenges and contributes considerably to the German Sustainability Development Strategy and to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With their innovative and sustainable solution approaches, each CLIENT II project impacts several SDGs at once.

In total, the funding measure covers all 17 global goals of the 2030 Agenda, with a particularly large impact on the following:

Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all;

Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all;

Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns;

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; and

Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development.

The following diagram illustrates the cross-sectoral and cross-thematic relevance of CLIENT II by visualising the links between the different thematic areas and the global Sustainable Development Goals. The diagram shows that each thematic area covered by CLIENT II contributes to different SDGs. The current number of CLIENT II collaborative projects that contribute to each SDG is shown on the right-hand side of the diagram.

The SDG agenda is extensive and complex, with a total of 167 targets between the 17 goals. In many cases, goals overlap, making it difficult to assign them to individual thematic areas. In order to do justice to this complexity and interconnectedness, the diagram focuses on those thematic areas covered by CLIENT II that contribute directly to achieving the SDGs.
